Coming Soon: Dior and Stone Island’s Groundbreaking Capsule Collection Combining Parisian Elegance and Italian Ingenuity
May 13, 2024
In an unprecedented collaboration, Dior and Stone Island have joined forces to create a menswear capsule collection that seamlessly blends the romance, rigor, and history of the Parisian fashion house with the northern Italian mastery of machine processes and meticulous functional detailing. Under the visionary guidance of Dior's creative director, Kim Jones, this collection represents a meeting of minds between two iconic brands with a shared passion for perfection and excellence in processes and clothing.
As visionary designer Kim Jones eloquently puts it, "There is a meeting of Monsieur Dior and Massimo Osti's work for Stone Island in this collection – it is the coming together of 'obsessives.' They might have been people from opposite ends of the fashion spectrum – from a high fashion vision to that of military functionality – yet I think they'd recognise something in each other and in what they achieved through clothing. Here, in the coming together of contrasting traditions, there's a new kind of clothing alchemy."
The collection showcases a hybridization of conventions, both in terms of technique and materiality alongside attitude and mood. Noble materials, particularly silk, are utilized as both a military mainstay and a high fashion staple. Stone Island's signature garment dyeing technique finds new form through Dior's experiments with garment-dyed embroidery, a completely new technique for both brands.
The 'Alchemy of Colour' emerges as a central theme, with signature colors and silhouettes from the Stone Island archive being transformed in intensity. A series of signs and symbols unite the houses, from the discreet 'double pleat' tailoring motif originating from Dior's Spring-Summer 1952 collection to the talismanically utilized cannage and compass rose motifs.
The shoes in this collection are a work of art, hybridizing crossed archetypes that celebrate both functionality and traditional, formal shoemaking. Boots and a derby, enhanced with a thick sole developed through three moldings, sit alongside a sneaker in Stone Island fabrication, stitched with the Dior oblique design.
However, it is the bags that truly showcase the contemporary savoir-faire that defines Dior Men today. High luxury meets high functionality in pieces like the circular leather trunk, magnified with Stone Island's compass rose and featuring tubes of gouache, temperas, ink, and watercolors produced by the family-owned Maison Sennelier, which has supplied and accompanied some of the greatest artists, including Picasso, Cézanne, and Delaunay.
This groundbreaking capsule collection represents more than just a collaboration; it is a testament to the enduring power of creativity, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence that defines both Dior and Stone Island. As fashion enthusiasts eagerly await its launch, one thing is certain: the Dior and Stone Island collaboration is set to redefine the very essence of luxury, innovation, and style in menswear.
