Maurizio Cattelan’s Provocative Return: “Sunday” Exhibition at Gagosian

April 18, 2024

After more than two decades, the art world provocateur Maurizio Cattelan is making a grand return to the gallery scene with his solo exhibition "Sunday," opening at Gagosian in New York on April 30, 2024. Known for his controversial and thought-provoking works, such as "America," a functional solid gold toilet installed at the Guggenheim Museum in 2016, Cattelan is set to confront the contradictions of American society and culture once again, while also addressing sensitive global issues.

Curator Francesco Bonami boldly proclaims Cattelan as "the most famous Italian artist since Caravaggio," a testament to the artist's ability to captivate both art-world audiences and the global public. Born in Padua in 1960, Cattelan has become a deeply political artist, investigating issues that affect us all through his work, often dismissed as mere pranks.

In "Sunday," Cattelan will showcase his talent for simultaneously addressing art history and current affairs, presenting them as parallel but paradoxically convergent tracks. The artist's recent exhibitions at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing and the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul have confirmed his international appeal and ability to engage diverse audiences.

Cattelan's work will also be featured as part of the Vatican's exhibition for the Holy See Pavilion at the 60th Biennale di Venezia (April 20–November 24), further cementing his status as a leading figure in contemporary art.

Don't miss the opportunity to witness Maurizio Cattelan's provocative return to the gallery scene at Gagosian, New York, from April 30 to June 29, 2024.
