Musician Mayh3mp and his horses don’t want you to have the same experience everybody else is having

mayh3mp for rain magazine

A concatenation of mayhem and hemp, mayh3mp is a fast-rising singer-songwriter in the emerging cloud rap/glitchcore scene. Leading his stans, also known as horses, mayh3mp is galloping to greatness. Seeing things differently is state-of-the-art on SoundCloud, where many artists like mayh3mp get their start. The space is also a community where collaboration has led artists in their bedrooms to lead innovation in music. Rain caught up with mayh3mp for the following fashion editorial.

Every once in a long while, a musical artist or, in this case, a galloping whinnying horse comes along that blows you away.

I like making people feel something, anything. It makes me feel myself, too. I get to know myself more with every song. It’s like journaling when you read back what you journaled a few years ago, and you’re like, ‘damn, I was going through it that day.’

You don’t have to be a colossal artist these days to have a cult following or an idea that people can resonate with.

Things change with each generation. Look at the twenties; everyone wore suits and listened to music that was slow and wholesome. People danced by moving one finger around and tapping a foot. Then it went to Footloose, and society tried to outlaw dancing. Then they ended up dancing, which goes to rock and roll. People start getting edgier. And now it’s at the point where the newness is super niche, but it is the coolest.

I don’t dress a certain way someone wants me to or look a certain way. More people need to break the balance of things like that.

Some things seem really bad and are the best thing ever. How would you know if something could be better if you never had something great? You have to learn.

Art shouldn’t be held to the same standard as someone actually going and doing something. Going and selling drugs is different than wearing a shirt that says I love selling drugs.

I love weird shit. Half my face is painted red right now. I look crazy. Everyone walking by is like, ‘Who is that guy?’ That opens something. Weird is good. I embrace it. If someone weird or crazy comes up to me, you better believe I will get to know them and see what is going on. The weirder, the better. The crazier, the better. Sometimes, those are the most sane people.
