Neil Barrett presents Uniforms of Masculinity, Autumn/Winter 2018. The collection focuses on the construction of menswear as a uniform.
“From the schoolyard to the office, denim to sportswear, tailoring to army fatigues. All are uniforms, all are rules – to be both respected, and challenged.”
Neil Barrett’s precision tailoring is on full display in the collection as models walk the catwalk in beautifully tailored coats. One, a traditional three button coat with train ticket pocket, and the other, a classic double breasted coat. The likeness of the ensembles and the models recalls the collection’s premise of uniforms and conformity.
More subversive work is at play. Sheer underpinnings are layered beneath suits on both men and women. Micro check patterns become head-to-toe uniforms: shirt, tie, coat, and pants in their entirety. Shearling and silk make statements on officer jackets, coats, parkas, and bombers for men and women. This is a luxurious collection and one that reimagines a new language for menswear, all under the guise of the uniform. Images courtesy of Neil Barrett.
