PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE Unveils Flagship Store in NoLita, Merging Art, Architecture, and Innovation

November 20, 2024

An exciting development for fashion and architecture enthusiasts, PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE announces the opening of its new flagship store in New York's vibrant NoLita neighborhood. Minimal and effortless, the new store elegantly captures the brand’s core values—innovation, functionality, and artistic craftsmanship.

Located at 14 Kenmare Street, the store occupies a landmark building designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Marking Ando’s first project in New York, the location is also his first residential building outside of Asia. Furthermore, the choice of NoLita, with its eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and cafés, reflects PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE's appreciation for neighborhoods that merge artistic heritage with contemporary energy.

The 2,224-square-foot retail space transforms its corner location, with 60 feet of street frontage, into a striking study of light, texture, and architectural precision. Embedded lighting rails in polished steel plates create dramatic overhead installations that enhance the sense of movement and light throughout the store. White molded resin wall panels mirror the brand's signature pleating techniques, adding depth and fluidity to the interior. Industrial concrete floors contrast with glossy surfaces and milky white fixtures, while sharp architectural lines evoke the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with pleating.

The innovative interior, designed by the Japanese firm MOMENT, creates a cohesive, multi-sensory space that embodies PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE’s philosophy of fashion as both art and utility. To celebrate the grand opening on December 12th, the store will debut SOIL & LEAF, an exclusive collection of pleated garments that blends natural textures with the brand’s signature design technique, available only at this location. This collection highlights the brand's commitment to offering New York shoppers an unparalleled product experience, one that merges cutting-edge pleating technology with the vibrant energy of the city.

Since its founding in 1994, PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE has built upon the innovative pleating technology introduced by Issey Miyake in 1988. The brand’s signature approach—pleating garments after they are constructed—results in clothing that combines functionality with artistic expression. These pieces are lightweight, machine-washable, and designed to adapt seamlessly to the wearer’s movements, offering both freedom and elegance in everyday life.

Located at the intersection of Elizabeth and Kenmare Streets, the flagship store sits at the heart of downtown Manhattan’s creative district. The industrial character of the NoLita neighborhood provides a fitting backdrop for the brand’s cutting-edge technology and unique aesthetic. This new space stands as a celebration of PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE’s ongoing commitment to blending innovative design with practical beauty, embodying the brand’s creative freedom in all its forms.
