Saint Laurent Expands Its Manhattan Presence with Multi-level Boutique in Meatpacking District
December 13, 2024
In a bold architectural statement, Saint Laurent has carved out its largest New York sanctuary in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. Under Anthony Vaccarello's masterful direction, this two-level sanctuary of style—the house's most ambitious New York project to date—emerges as a world of textural contrasts and immaculate form. Rooted in the house's design language, as epitomized with the Parisian flagship boutique on Champs-Élysées, the Meatpacking location echoes this vision as historic elements combine with contemporary fluidity to offer an unparalleled luxury experience.
At its center, a commanding spiral staircase in black wood unfolds poetically through the interior like a sculptural ribbon, its dark form cutting against concrete walls and drapery. This interplay of textures—smooth against rough, reflective against matte—echoes the dualities that have long defined the house's aesthetic vernacular.
Vaccarello's architectural vision finds its voice in carefully curated materials: cosmic and travertino marble tables seem to float, while blue-glazed ceramic niches provide punctuated moments of unexpected color. Fantasy grey and cipolino marble frame the store's warm and inviting atmosphere. Continuing its themes of natural materials, the space is furnished with walnut furniture that evokes the relaxing atmosphere of the late 60s and 70s—periods of significance for Yves Saint Laurent and his lasting mark on the fashion industry.
The boutique's curatorial vision embraces twentieth-century design, pairing American modernist masters Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright with French design pioneers Francis Jourdain and Guillerme & Chambon, alongside mid-century visionaries Edward Wormley and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings.
This new space at 72 Gansevoort Street joins Saint Laurent's existing Manhattan locations at 3 East 57 Street and 80 Greene Street with a distinctly different temperament. In this former industrial quarter where its cobblestoned thoroughfares tell tales of commerce past, with this new location Saint Laurent has captured New York's endless capacity for reinvention. The complete Saint Laurent universe unfolds within: men's and women's ready-to-wear, accessories, and fine jewelry find their place among dramatic and inspiring architecture, each collection in conversation with its surroundings. In this space, Vaccarello's vision crystallizes—where the legacy of the house is transported from Paris to the city's industrial heritage, embracing and transforming it with the precision and modernist grace that defined Yves Saint Laurent.
