The connection between Rolex and James Bond

October 26, 2023

From the very beginning of Ian Fleming's James Bond character, wristwatches have made a prominent appearance. The James Bond watch is always classic, stylish and functional.

But of course, there is one watch brand that almost always makes an appearance in the Bond movies: Rolex. This article explores the relationship between Rolex and James Bond and how these two stylish legends are tied together.

The history behind Rolex and James Bond

Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. Over the years, Rolex became known for its precision, durability and elegance, transforming into the premium watch brand it is today.

Most popular theories say the brand name came from the French phrase "horlogerie exquise," meaning "exquisite clockwork". Rolex's craftmanship and innovation are definitely "exquisite", and it has made them a world-renowned leader in the watch industry.

James Bond's watches through the ages

James Bond has always been sharp and dapper, but his Rolex preference has changed over the years.

In the beginning, Sean Connery sported the Rolex Submariner, reference 6538, in "Dr.No." the robust and stylish design matches Bond's action-packed lifestyle perfectly and is now one of the most iconic timepieces in the watchmaking industry.

Over the years, various other Rolex models have been featured in the Bond movies, including the GMT-Master and Pre-Daytona Rolex Chronograph. However, in the more recent movies featuring Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, Bond underwent a style evolution. The character switched out his iconic Rolex pieces for the Omega Seamaster.

As the franchise develops, we will likely see more luxury watch brands making an appearance in the Bond movies.

The enduring appeal

A Rolex watch is a classic timepiece that will stay in your family for generations to come. The brand is all about luxurious watches with unique designs that make them the perfect fit for a character like James Bond.

Rolex has an element of aspiration. When you achieve a career goal or financial milestone, buying yourself a Rolex isn't just a normal gift. It's a mark of an enormous achievement that you have worked hard for.

The name carries weight, and that's why so many people choose to invest in the brand. It doesn't hurt that the watches are perfectly crafted, either.

However, if you can't quite afford a brand-new Rolex, there are also pre-loved ones to consider. They come with their own story and the same impeccable design.
