Zac Posen Debuts Stunning Custom Gap Gown for Da’Vine Joy Randolph at Met Gala 2024
May 7, 2024
Gap Inc.'s Executive Vice President and Creative Director, Zac Posen, made a remarkable debut at the Met Gala 2024, unveiling a one-of-a-kind custom Gap gown for Oscar® Award-Winning actor Da'Vine Joy Randolph. The event marked Randolph's first Met Gala red carpet appearance and Posen's first public-facing project since his appointment to his new role at Gap Inc. in February.
Posen, who also serves as the Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, focused on his role as a cultural curator, igniting creativity across the Gap Inc. portfolio, which includes Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta. "I'm proud to represent Gap Inc. – a portfolio of iconic American brands – on a world stage like the Met Gala, where fashion meets entertainment to shape the cultural conversation," Posen stated.
The custom denim gown, crafted exclusively for Randolph, drew inspiration from themes of romanticism, nature, and historic icons. Posen collaborated with Gap's denim experts to create a masterpiece that pays homage to Gap's classic 1969 denim while incorporating elements reminiscent of historic evening wear from the 1700s. The creative process evoked memories of Posen's time at The Costume Institute, where he first encountered the exquisite beauty of historic garments.
Inspired by the view from the Gap Inc. headquarters in San Francisco, the gown features a bold "international red" lining, echoing the oxidized pigment of the city's iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The aquatic and shell-like forms of the gown evoke the movement of water through its rich indigo denim wash. Posen also drew inspiration from JG Ballard's timeless tale, "The Garden of Time," masterfully blending heritage with modernity by juxtaposing the structure of Gap denim with the delicate silhouette of 18th-century gowns.
Randolph, who felt powerful and feminine in the gown, remarked, "With this Gap gown, I've fallen back in love with denim. It makes me feel very feminine, but in a way that I can identify with - through strength, power, and resilience."
Posen accompanied Randolph on the Met Gala red carpet, styled in a made-to-measure Banana Republic suit and pants, draped in high-quality Italian wool, along with a premium, double 120 count superior poplin front placket shirt, white silk bowtie, and a Lily of the Valley brooch from Verdura. Fans can shop an inspired look at select Banana Republic stores and online.
The collaboration between Gap, Posen, and Randolph celebrates originality and individual style, showcasing the brand's rich history of using denim as a canvas for self-expression. The custom gown elegantly captures the importance of Randolph's debut at the Met Gala, following her successful award season, and marks a significant milestone in Posen's new role at Gap Inc.
